The specialist in your area helps NHS organisations and their partners in local government and the voluntary sector to achieve real improvement in the quality of services through the effective use of information and evidence.
Our local specialists work with you to develop your organisation’s capacity to use information and evidence effectively to improve outcomes for people using maternity and children’s services in your community.
The free on-site support we offer includes:
- Advice in using child and maternal health data, including help with collating and analysing data for specific projects.
- Training for you and your team on how to use this site and online tools.
- One-to-one guidance on using available tools and data to improve your commissioning process.

East of England
Yorkshire and the Humber
Natalie is the local specialist for the East Midlands and is based within its Public Health England Knowledge and Intelligence team. Natalie leads on a regional work plan developed in partnership with local stakeholders. Natalie also provides regional support through training and one to one support for local practitioners and analysts on our tools, website and information.
Natalie has ten years' NHS experience and has worked in public health analysis for the past four years. Natalie also has a wider role leading on JSNA, training and the East Midlands Public Health Intelligence Network.

East of England
Julia is the local specialist for the East of England. She started in the role in May 2010 and attends local meetings, workshops and one-to-one sessions to demonstrate the use of tools, information and intelligence in supporting the child health community in the area. She will also give feedback from them to us.
Julia has worked as a public health Information Analyst in the East of England for the last 10 years.

Denise is the local specialist for London. She is part of the PHE London Knowledge and Intelligence team.

Helene is the local specialist for the North East of England and joined the team in September 2010. Helene works part-time and is based in the Regional Maternity Survey Office (RMSO) in Newcastle. Helene will engage with relevant stakeholders by offering support and training to increase their organisation’s capacity to use child and maternal health intelligence. Through a centralised approach to children’s information resources and the suite of our online tools, Helene will assist key players to understand ‘the message behind the numbers’ and consequently make evidence based decisions to improve service delivery.
Helene’s background is predominately local government, having spent over 10 years in roles relating to performance and project management within social services and the analysis and accurate recording of data. Helene has also undertaken and led several specialist projects involving integrating new IT systems, developing training programmes and conducting user experience surveys.

Lynn Deacon is the North West local specialist. Lynn supports key stakeholders in the North West with child and maternal health information needs, as well as providing advice, support and training across the region on our tools and intelligence.
Prior to her appointment as North West local specialist, Lynn worked within the North West Public Health Observatory as Knowledge and Communications Project Manager, managing and contributing to a variety of research outputs. Lynn also worked in a range of research and analytical roles in the learning and skills sector for several years before working in public health. She is a graduate of Bradford University School of Management and a Chartered Marketer.

Susan supports the development and delivery of health intelligence in the field of child and maternal health for the South East Region. This includes leading a programme of training professionals in the use of information resources to support decision making to improve the health and well-being of children, young people and pregnant women across the region. Key stakeholders across the South East are the main focus of this programme of meetings, workshops and one-to-one liaison and support. Based in Oxford, Susan will be travelling around the region to deliver this role.
Susan has both a medical and business background, having studied Medicine as well as qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. She has over 10 years' experience in NHS management and local government, including project management, strategic planning and financial management.

Nicola specialises in the development and delivery of health intelligence and research in the field of child and maternal health in the South West. In addition, Nicola advises those working locally about the application to their work of health information in this specialism, including training on our tools.
Nicola has worked in social research for just over 20 years. Much of this work has been in public health intelligence, research and policy. She has also carried out research on wider social welfare and service delivery issues. Nicola has worked in a variety of research environments during this time including university departments, NHS based organisations and the Civil Service. She has been based at the South West Public Health Observatory for four years where her work has focussed on end of life care, skin cancer, evaluating public health interventions for children and ethnicity and health.
She has wide-ranging research expertise covering both qualitative and quantitative research techniques.
