GARS – 2 - Gilliam Autism Rating Scale – Second edition

Vulnerabilities
The tool identifies the existence and severity of autism.

Description of tool
A set of 42 statements that describe the characteristic behaviour of a person with autism, clustered into 3 topics: stereotyped behaviour, communication, and social interaction.

With a structured interview form, to collect information from parents.

Time to administer
About 20 minutes

Has tool been validated?
Completed mainly by teachers but can be delivered by other professionals.

For use with children and young adults aged 3-22.

The Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) – adolescent version

Vulnerabilities
This was developed as a tool for use with children and young people (under 16) who have autistic spectrum syndrome.

Description of tool
A set of 50 short statements about behaviour and feelings in different situations, with a choice of 4 answers (indicating level of agreement with the statement).

Time to administer
About 10 minutes

Has tool been validated?
For self completion, monitored by health worker.

Adolescent version is for age 11-16. Adult version can be used from age 16.
