AUDIT - Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test

Description of tool
A set of 10 questions (with answers to circle) about the frequency and amount of drinking, feelings about it, and impact on others.

Has tool been validated?
Yes

It has shown promising results when tested on older adolescents and young adults.

Comments and how to access tool
Note: the tool was developed for use with adults and so the scoring reflects this. When using with young people, take a lower score (3 rather than 8) as an indication that further investigation is needed.



AUDIT-C - Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - short version

This is a short version of AUDIT (above).

Description
It asks the 3 core questions of the 10 questions in the full version.

A positive score prompts use of the other 7 questions (provided overleaf from the short version).

Less than 5 minutes

It has shown promising results when tested on older adolescents and young adults.

Note, as above, for AUDIT: the tool has not been validated for under 18s, but it is considered appropriate for young people if the lower score



CRAFFT – Care, Relax, Alone, Family, Friends, Trouble

Vulnerabilities
This tool screens for drug and alcohol use.

Description of tool
A set of 6 questions (yes/no answers) about the circumstances and impact of using alcohol or drugs.

Adapted from an adult version and validated for age 14-18.

Adolescent SASSI A2 - Substance Use Subtle Screening Inventory

Vulnerabilities
A tool that highlights criminal justice issues and care planning and includes:

  • Environmental and attitudinal risk factors
  • Distinctions between abuse and dependence
  • Possible suicidal ideation

Description of tool
Described as a brief 2-page tool, easy to administer and user friendly.

Time to administer
15 minutes

Has tool been validated?
Yes.

With high levels of accuracy for age 12-18.

With 94 per cent accuracy in identifying substance misuse disorders.

Paper and CD versions are available to purchase (about £1 each).

The website includes notes for YOT workers and about how the tool can support the CAF (follow the link Adolescents on the web page).

Deemed to provide a psychological profile that can be useful in motivational work.
